When photographing people I find myself either directing or observing.
I will direct based on my observations when working on a commercial assignment, because that’s what the job is about. Controlling what happens within the frame, the lighting, composition, they are put into place and then I encourage people to perform within that frame and I look for a moment within what is playing out in front of me.
When engaged in work of a more documentary nature and I have no control it’s a much freer process and I position myself to the light firstly and then to what is unfolding in front of me. I like to stay unnoticed and on the fringes. It’s a much more purist approach and I become acutely attuned to everything within my environment.
Again waiting for the ‘Decisive Moment’
