“Vision, Timing.” is how I define my work. Early influences like Cartier Bresson’s  ‘Decisive Moment’  and Robert Frank’s reportage style are etched into my work and I always attune myself to the definitive moment.

This scene and instant, captured as young boys race across a beach playing football in the Transkei, showcases it completely.  The action, light and shadow combine beautifully, the positioning of the subjects create a directional diagonal, racing across the frame.  The tones and qualities of a lith print completed this much loved shot.

This image is shot earlier on in my career and forms a loose collection of documentary shots that capture the energy and vibrancy that is so prevalent in South Africa. We are a young nation full of enthusiasm and a degree of naivety. There is a measure of innocence and a decided lack of self awareness that is refreshing. From a time before social media where children were unconcerned about anything more than enjoying the moment.
