If you are looking for an animal and image that says Africa look no further.
The Cape Mountain Zebra once nearly driven to extinction, saved by the establishment of the Mountain Zebra National Park in 1937 for the conservation of this zebra, saw populations increase and it has recovered due to conservation methods. It is now listed as Vulnerable. The total population is very small, around 497 mature individuals with a small gene pool it is susceptible to genetic drift, inbreeding depression and disease.
The smallest of the zebra species it has a white belly and lacks the shadow stripes of a plains zebra.
‘de Hoop’ Nature reserve currently has over 100 and this portrait was taken there.
