Sometimes when you are in the middle of nowhere, not really sure of where you are headed, you end up having the best experiences.

We were somewhere in Damaraland, Namibia making our way northwards  to the border and the Epupa Falls. A hot and dusty Saturday afternoon, the heat bearing down on us through our open windows, pressing us against our seats as we traversed a shimmering, sunbaked pan. A sharp cracking sound in the distance followed by what sounded like peals of laughter caused us to change our heading and turn towards it. The source, two young guys riding a donkey, taking tremendous pleasure in making it buck like a bronco, their legs like clamps around it’s belly. The unbridled joy and simple fun of two friends in the middle of nowhere. Their laughter and giggles hung in the warm air like the dust.

This image is shot earlier on in my career and forms a loose collection of documentary shots that capture the energy and vibrancy that is so prevalent in Southern Africa. We are a young nation full of enthusiasm and a degree of naivety. There is a measure of innocence and a decided lack of self awareness that is refreshing. From a time before social media where children were unconcerned about anything more than enjoying the moment.
