Working for about 7 months without a break when I started the gallery I was desperate to get out to sea and clear my head and breath some sea air.

I arranged to get on a boat and as we headed out towards Sea Point, Cape Town,  found a whale but it sounded. We turned in the direction of  Robben Island and headed towards it. A while later we noticed another whale in the distance and it’s course was intersecting with ours so I checked all the settings on my camera just in case. It had disappeared down from view for a while and the next instant it breached. I quickly adjusted my focus and readied myself. The second time it breached I fired off a few frames.

It breached once again in an entirely different area and then sounded,  disappearing completely. Display over.

We completed our excursion around  the island and it never even occurred to me to check my shots in back of the camera to see what I had captured. It was only the following day when I was downloading my images that I saw that I had managed to capture a fantastic breaching shot with Cape Town Stadium in the background.

It’s great having the marine life images that show the city as a background and illustrate just how close these encounters can occur and it makes the shot even more special in my opinion. I know I was extremely fortunate to capture this moment, just to get a breaching shot is hard enough but in relation to the stadium and city, not sure if it will happen again.

The incredible colours and tones of the wintry sky with the dramatic clouds and early morning light all contribute to a once in a lifetime shot.
