I had worked for about 7 months without a break and was desperate to get out to sea and clear my head. I arranged to get on a boat and as we headed out towards Sea Point, found a whale but sounded. We turned in the direction of  Robben Island and headed off. A while later we noticed another whale in the distance and it’s course was intersecting with ours so I checked all the settings on my camera. It had disappeared down from view but the next instant it breached and I quickly adjusted my focus and the 2nd time broke the surface I fired off a few frames. It resurfaced breaching once again in an entirely different area and then sounded, disappearing completely. We completed our excursion around  the island and it never even occurred to me to check my shots in back of the camera to see what I had captured. It was only the following day when I was downloading my images that I saw that I had managed to capture a fantastic breaching shot with Cape Town Stadium in the background. It’s great having the marine life seen in context to the city and how close these encounters can occur and  makes the shot even more special. The colours and tones of the wintry sky with the dramatic clouds and early morning light all contribute to a once in a lifetime shot.
