The decisive moment in photography and the inner eye are so well illustrated in this image. The permutations involved for it all to come together as it has are staggering. The wave action, the gyrocopter flying at that height and trajectory, the photographer (me) twisting around in an open cabin happening to have his camera pointed in the direction, the cormorant flying towards the open pole with a white wave under it the moment I took the photo. I can’t profess to be aware of it all but have come to recognise these moments that I have the joy to witness and record.

Flying over the little fishing village of Arniston along the shoreline back up towards Cape Infanta in a gyrocopter, we passed over the beacons that demarcate the start of the De Hoop Nature Reserve. I saw the composition with the breaking wave and the line of poles and instinctively shot off a frame. The rest a joyous coincidence?
