Short tailed ray

A Short Tailed Stingray, (Bathytoshia brevicaudata), surrounded by small fish, glides over a stony bottom. These rays grow to be quite large and I have swum with them over 2 meters. They are a favoured food of great White Sharks so it pays to keep a sharp eye out when you do this.

 

Shooting Black & White film underwater, on breath hold and then going into the darkroom to produce a unique ‘Lith Print’ I was able to capture and portray a distinctive interpretation of what I encountered on my countless free dives in and around Cape Town.
This series of prints remains some of my favorite and most treasured work.
