There is nothing in this picture that lets on to the size of this wave.

Cape Town has 2 big wave spots. Sunset Reef off Kommetjie on the southern peninsula is one, the other perhaps more known is Dungeons off the Sentinel, Hout Bay the other.

Sunset is a paddle in and breaks both left and right. It is more unpredictable and when you are  out in a small boat trying to photograph surfers, the skipper had better be awake. The size of a wave is difficult to judge without a reference point and this shot doesn’t actually convey just how big it is and the volume of water involved.  Those big wave surfers are incredibly brave and maybe just a tad touched.

I love the Sentinel and the line of mountains formed way back in the background as it creates a juxtaposition. A solid mass of rock and a moving mass of water. The power and the motion of waves have captivated us from the beginning of time.
