Bush Mechanic, Phillipi Township, Cape Town

I called this shot ‘Bush Mechanic” but it really should be “Street Mechanic”. I was walking down a dirt road in one of the side streets in Phillipi township when I saw this character sitting out on the side of the road in front of his house, in the hot sun, in a completely oil covered overall. It was one of those insulated ones that refrigeration workers wear and I remember thinking to myself how does he cope with the heat?  The next thought I thought was does he walk in the door at the end of the day and kiss his wife with a “honey I’m home!” ? I think he has been pulling that overall on every morning for the last several years at it is completely oil soaked. The gearbox, hydraulic jack and collection of car parts strewn in the background all combine beautifully with the hat and hole in the safety boot to tell the story of the circumstances of his life but the eye smiling look he gave me when I raised my camera gives me a tremendous insight in to who he is as a person.
