The smallest of the zebra species it has a white belly and lacks the shadow stripes of a plains zebra.
The Cape Mountain Zebra once nearly driven to exctinction and the establishment of the Mountain Zebra National Park in 1937 for the conservation of this zebra saw populations increase and it has recovered due to conservation methods and is now listed as Vulnerable. The total population is very small, around 497 mature individuals with a small gene pool is susceptible to genetic drift, inbreeding depression and disease.
