Looking at these images knowing I had something quite special, made me really grateful for the factors that conspired to make it possible.

It’s not often you see images of whales in the fog, mainly because it would not be possible to find them.

We had come across this pod of vigourously feeding Humpback Whales quite by chance and we stopped to enjoy the spectacle. We had been watching them for only a few minutes when a large fog bank came rolling in. As the grey engulfed them I started shooting pictures and a multitude of birds in the diffuse light completed the spectacle. The echoey sounds of their collective breathing reverberating all around us had a chaotic rhythm to it and added to the atmosphere.

Not an entirely visual experience I know, the deep, hollow breathing amplified by the fog made this one of the most memorable experiences I have had out on the sea.
