Pannawonica, Pop 652 #1

Driving up through the Pilbara making our way to Millstream Chichester National Park we came across a mining town,(as you do up that way) Pannawonica. I took the turn and did a quick drive through the town. I recall it had a library and a primary school and apparently this has been upgraded in recent years. It seemed pretty similar to small mining towns as they existed in South Africa many years ago. The “drive in”  or outdoor cinema as it may be known was an absolute gem and the steel benches a classic.

Growing up in Pretoria, South Africa “drive in” was a regular Friday night event and if we went with my Gran and her boyfriend it was a treat as we bought food and cool drinks from the cafeteria. If it was with the family it was a pre packed supper from home, but still pretty exciting. We weren’t allowed to watch from outside the car though as there were older children of a variety of backgrounds around. I think those benches in Pannawonica worked just fine as the population was 652.

Sitting under the stars in the cool fresh air watching your heroes on the big screen, those were the days.
