Exploring Moments:
Your Window to Captivating Photographs
I photographed this beautiful painterly image as the herd made their way from the fynbos scrub and shrubs onto a dry riverbed. It spoke to me about their repopulation and progress. They have come back from the very brink of extinction and their future has been assured.
Killed as pests in the early 20th century they were reduced to 17 individuals making them the rarest antelope in the world for a time. In 1931 a dutch farmer corralled them and they were relocated to the Bontebok National Park which was promulgated with the explicit purpose of conserving the species. Currently the population is estimated at 3000 individuals and this is increasing as they are bred and farmed.
They are such beautiful antelope and I battle to understand how they were viewed as pests but I guess it was different times.
