It’s so difficult to try and put into words what you feel when you are amongst these giants, surrounded by the sights and smells.

Mostly I am concentrating on timing their blows and tails, watching them to see how they are forming up and trying to keep interesting compositions in the viewfinder. It is so dynamic as they can be circling in one place for a while and then head off at speed obviously reacting to what’s going on underneath them. It’s only afterwards when I am sitting with a large monitor in front of me that I can truly see and appreciate what I have captured.

In this image they are jet black and sleek like a marauding U boat pack and are traveling speedily southwards as they feed with vigour. A pod of Humpback Whales set against a scenic backdrop of the Sentinel and the Karbonkelberg, Cape Town, South Africa this is such an atmospheric shot.
