‘Smoke that Thunders’ Victoria Falls, Zambia
The ‘Smoke that Thunders’ or ‘Mosi oa Tunya’ is the world’s largest waterfall and a true natural spectacle to be experienced. It is timeless and transports one back to the Africa of old. Enveloped by the thundering craching water, soaked by the mists of swirling spray it is possible to sit and imagine the first time Livingstone set eyes on this spectacle and icon of Africa that is set on the mighty Zambezi River. Watching thousands of tons of water pouring over the edge is mesmerising and hypnotic.
Known to locals that guided Livingstone to it on his explorations as the “Smoke that Thunders” the spray plumes up from the vast mass of water rushing over the vast edge and lifts them hundreds of meters into the air so that from afar it looks like smoke rising out of the valley. The fall creates it’s own micro climate and I experienced a violent hailstorm whilst I was there taking this photograph. Fortunately I had a large umbrella and I ended up with about 7 chinese tourists huddled around me trying to take refuge from the deluge.
A true African experience that stills remains with me years after I experienced it.
