I envisioned this print large on a wall. No explanation, no blurb, just an abstract image. It could be a lunar landscape.

As it turns out it is a Dawsons Bee Hive that we came across on the dirt road to Miaboolya Beach, Gascoyne, Western Australia. We rounded the corner and saw a few crudely planted sticks in the ground. Someone had put up some markers to indicate and warn of the hive. For about 12 meters there were these holes in the ground and all these bumble bees flying above it. What happens is at it gets warm after some rain the females that were in the ground come out and as they do, the males that are buzzing about waiting for them launch themselves onto the females and proceed to mate. It’s quite a spectacle and we spent a couple of hours there observing and filming it.

We were quite fortunate to come across it when we did as it doesn’t last that long and when we returned the following day the show was over.
